James Nelson papers, 1915-1984 (bulk 1934-1955).

The collection document the activities of James Nelson, cofounder and first president of District 50 of the United Mine Workers (UMW). The collection includes correspondence with local and national labor leaders, materials relating to a published manuscript about the formation and early operations of District 50, unpublished manuscript materials about the career of labor leader John Brophy, union convention proceedings, constitutions, agreements, periodicals, photographs, and several items of memorabilia.

James Nelson, labor leader and author, was born in Liverpool, England in 1903 and immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. After receiving a degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., Nelson made his home in Wakefield, Mass.
